    THE COUTURIER

The evolution of style is the evolution of the life of Man.
The history of customs is an authentic documentation of the intimate history of Man. Fashion is the way we keep temporal tabs on this history.

An early twentieth century rhythm. The story of Luisa Spagnoli
is the pencil we use to trace an outline
    of Italian customs.

The voice belongs to the fabrics, the women, the men, the dressmakers and the cities.
    Paris above all.

    FROM FEMININITY TO AUSTERITY

Post-war years characterized by reconstruction and the desire for renewal, well-being and optimism.
There’s a new kind of freedom in the air, and it comes with a ‘roar’.

Fashion seems to be architecture, geometry, mathematics. Straight lines, soft light fabrics – chiffon, tulle, organza and silk – and skirts ever higher above the knee.
Narrow hips, curves providing the body with edge, give life to a new quest for femininity, less androgynous and simpler, more practical.

Women that are feminine and undulating, even in the clothes of austerity!

    MADE IN ITALY

This period witnesses the triumph of Made in Italy: clothes that are works of art, created by real craftsmen, refined and high quality both in terms of the fabric and the cut. Enchanting creatures are let loose upon the world. A historic moment of change and contamination. Challenges, styles, bon ton and pin ups,
clothes and trends that take arms against the denial of freedoms and go in search of a consolidated feminine dignity. Skirts get shorter and become ‘mini’.

    The canons of beauty change,
making way for the avant-garde and protest.

    EMANCIPATION

The world is forever becoming. Everything is beautiful, life is beautiful and there is a new carefree attitude in the air. Fashion, lifestyles, music
and art all become sources of positive modernity. The Maxi takes its place alongside the mini, and the casual supplants flower power.

It’s a turbulent time: demonstrations of workers and students, collective protests, anti-conformism and the emergence of the must have, which will underlie
revivalism in the years to follow.

    RE-NEWALS

Globalization and the marketing of luxury goods. From relentless consumerism to showy optimism, from the Yuppies of Manhattan to the melting-pot of the nineties,
all the way up to improvisation and the invention of the new millennium.

The history of customs and traditions is steeped in revivalism and, especially, eclecticism. New stylistic and socio-cultural forms of research. Haute couture gets its foot back in the door, adjusting to the latest models and consumer patterns. It finds a new role, becoming the stage for free creativity and hopeful experimentation.

Garments shake off meanings that had been attached to them for so long and take on others; but they also experience anew the stereotypes of revival, with a new idea of beauty that is made up of colours and nuances, the old and the new.

The history of customs: a ‘human being’ that is evolving continuously. Just as we are, inside and out.
